I got the opportunity to interview Owen Keehnen, the author behind the book Starz (Starbooks Press), and I was curious about his experiences interviewing 150+ porn stars...Owen, how did you get the idea for such a massive project?
I used to work at a big gay and lesbian-friendly bookstore in Chicago, Unabridged. Anyway, guys would frequently come in asking for stuff on porn stars. There were a couple bios and a guidebook or two out there — but nothing that really got into the lives of these guys. The market was there — but not the product. Well, I thought, "Who better than me for this smutty little undertaking?"
How long is each interview?
They vary a lot. Gino Colbert, Rik Jammer and Matt Sizemore come to mind as being probably the longest at maybe 10-12 pages. Some guys were just more open and forthcoming with info and themselves as well as being more verbally oriented. On the other hand some guys answered the initial questionnaire that accompanies each interview — along with a couple pages of just basic questions. So I would say they range from 4-12 pages.
Who took the photos?
With a few exceptions (personal pics and such) the photos were mostly courtesy of the studios. Everyone was extremely helpful when it came to that aspect of putting the book together.
How did you go about obtaining interviews with all the stars?
Some guys were harder to get than others. Matt Sizemore was a doll — he actually took me around during the International Mr. Leather convention here in Chicago and introduced me to loads of guys in the industry. What a sweetheart! Three of the first guys I talked to were Matt, Michael Brandon, and Chad Hunt — a trio of the "biggest" names in the biz. Once I got some well-known guys associated with the book it was easier to get others to come on board — it gave the project an added legitimacy.
And people do love to talk about themselves. Who were your favorite stars to interview?
Matt Sizemore of course is always in my thoughts since he was so thoughtful and helpful and instrumental in getting it off the ground. His life is in a different phase right now and I wish him the absolute best. Michael Solider I loved — such a great passion for life — that comes through in his XXX stuff — but that energy is how he approaches (or seems to approach) every facet of his life. I got a rather (ahem) sizeable crush on him. That passion for experience and for everything is so hot — absolutely the best character trait to have in my book. Cynicism is so overrated! Other guys — let's see. Rik Jammer was a genius — ditto for Andy Dill. Tag Adams is too sweet and too cute for words — then in a snap he can become the raunchiest guy on the planet — I love that!
So many others — Bret Wolfe is another pig/angel, Sam Tyson, Chad Hunt, Carlo Cox — that accent, those eyes — Enrico Vega, Michael Brandon, Bobby Blake, Sean Storm, Michael Lucas, J.C. Carter, DC Chandler, Will Clark, Parker Williams, Zak Spears, Jason Ridge. Donnie Russo is a sweetheart. Brad McGuire is so hot and talented! Chris Steele is a smart guy and extremely warm — not to mention sexy as hell. Brian-Mark is a gem and so sweet and it just boggles my mind when I see some of the no-boundaries stuff he does for the camera.
Who are your favorite porn stars?
Of all time — Al Parker, Eric Manchester... Eric is still around I believe, but Al is gone. So many guys from that era have passed away. Of the current crop of guys — and ones in the book — Parker Williams is an incredible fucking force of nature! J.C. Carter is the best cocksucker in the world! Zak Spears makes my knees go weak — it was a fantasy come true to talk with him — "talk dirty to me Zak". Talking on the phone with Donnie Russo was also sort of a dream come true. Yowsah! Rod Rockhard has the biggest dick I've ever seen. Shane Rollins is stunning. Nick Piston — HOT! Couple him with Steve Cannon and imagine their raunchy sex at home and you have fantasy material for months!
What are your favorite movies?
I love [director] Joe Gage. He is amazing. The man can capture and sustain that moment of "sex potential/tension" between two men like no one else. To me that is almost hotter than the actual sex. It's that moment when the air is thick and sex has yet to happen — but it is coming and both guys know it but neither one wants to make the first move. Long uncomfortable silences. That gets me every time. His old stuff is genius — 'Kansas City Trucking', 'Heatstroke', 'LA Tool and Die', and 'El Paso Wrecking' are all amazing. I am so glad he's back from his hiatus and making movies again. He hasn't lost the touch! 'Tulsa County Line' will be a classic! He often uses more regular looking guys than a lot porn directors — which is much sexier. I also like that the sex in Gage's movies isn't always suck-suck-rim-fuck-cum over. He varies it. Some guys only jack-off, others shoot a load getting sucked. Once sex becomes formulaic is loses so much — that happens a lot in porn movies.
Who was your least favorite to interview?
Hmmm. Well, my two least favorites (who shall remain nameless) didn't end up in the final version of the book. The most insane was the guy (lets call him WC — and yes I know that's the initials of water closet!) who aborted the interview in a tirade after being asked his dick size in the standard questionnaire. I mean — I'm interviewing porn stars. It seemed pertinent. If I was interviewing him for a job at Pottery Barn then I could see throwing his panties in a bunch — but if you're an XXX star? Odd.
Another guy was completely done with the interview and it had gone okay and then called me suddenly possessed by Tina (I am assuming) and demanded his interview be removed from the manuscript. He called me a bad person (gasp!) and said he never wanted to do the interview from the start (huh?). Very sad and weird and kinda hurtful.
You have a Volume 2 of STARZ coming out, called MORE STARZ, correct?
That's coming this autumn. I am putting together the finishing touches on it now. So many hot guys in there — Colton Ford, Nick Capra, Brad Benton, Johnny Hazzard, Gus Mattox, Jeff Palmer, Blake Harper, Tyson Cane, Matt Summers, Joe Foster, Arpad Miklos, Pete Ross, Dick Wolf, Kent Larson, Filippo Romano, Jason Branch, etc. It's something like 80 chats with various guys. I'll try and edit that one down to 70. More will be revealed when the times is right! This is my (wet) dream job. EVEN MORE STARZ can't be far off!
Did you have sex with any of your interview subjects? Tell the truth!
Not while the recorder was running. But I did or have had sexual relations with 3 of the 60. That's a scant 5% if I am doing the math correctly. Which is rather chaste by gay standards — especially given how attracted I was to most of the guys. And no Jeff, I am not naming names. I may not have great morals, but I do have a solid set of ethics!
